Is there anything more panic inducing than smashing out those final few sentences as you watch that deadline creep closer? Every time, you promise yourself that you’ll never let it happen again. That is, until the next week when the next piece of work is due in five hours and you’re staring at a blank word document wondering how you ended up in this position again. But this time, instead of falling into a pile of self-loathing, let’s look at some long-term benefits for those hectic pre-deadline hours.

You’ve spent more time socialising

We’ve all gone out on a Saturday night when we’ve got an assignment due Monday. Sure, you can promise yourself you won’t go too hard and will come home early to study, but before you know it, you’re six shots in and not completely sure where you are any more.

Luckily for us though, research from Brigham Young University says that those of us who enjoy good social relationships on average, live 50 per cent longer than those who socially isolate themselves. On top of that, it’s also thought that those who socialise are less likely to catch a cold and have improved brain health from maintaining those strong social ties. So next time you want to socially isolate yourself and stay home and study on a Saturday night, either stock up on Codral, or go out and cultivate your social ties. You can thank me later.

You’re basically just practicing for your exam

Want to know how to make exams less stressful? Just turn every assignment into a practice exam by taking the time to perfectly compile your notes and then writing them in a mad frenzy two hours before they’re due. Then by the time exams come over, you’re ready, you’ve got this.

You’re drinking caffeine to get through

If you thought your coffee addiction was bad, listen up, because coffee actually cuts throat and mouth cancer by 50 percent and stroke risk by twenty-two percent. On top of that, when you get into those early hours and hit that caffeinated sweet spot, you can be fairly certain the caffeine is writing your assignment for you, because you probably won’t remember doing it the next day.

You’ve got more time for Netflix

Netflix, the Holy Grail of procrastination tools. Not only is it lovingly checking on us when we’ve been watching for four hours straight, but it’s even improving our emotional intelligence with its high quality, totally bingeable dramas, which is way more useful than anything found in a textbook.

Even if the dramas aren’t your thing, you can still get in on the Netflix goodness. Pennbrooke University has found that sitting for long periods of time focused on a screen can sharpen your eyes, brain and lower body. It’s like a gym, but you don’t have to do anything, which I’m pretty sure is the best type of gym.

You’re getting some good hormones in there

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to appreciate that blood pumping feeling, but it turns out appreciating it is the key to benefiting from it. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has found that those who embrace their stress can enjoy a longer life than those who are never stressed. So, instead of hating yourself as you smash out your conclusion, take a deep breath, remember these amazing things and embrace your status as King or Queen of the Procrastination.
